Can’t find a tool? Post a free need instead

Search finds listed inventory. Needs tell neighbors what you’re looking for—without publishing your address.

Checklist for posting a tool need

Search first. Need second.

Start with search. If nothing fits the dates or tool type, don’t abandon the project—post a free tool need.

What a public need shows

  • What you need and category
  • City and state (area only)
  • Timing and optional budget
  • Never your street address, email, or phone on the public card

Full detail and responses require a free account—same login on web and apps.

Why owners care

Owners often list after they see demand. A clear need is a signal: “someone nearby wants this.” That can prompt a garage inventory check and a new listing.

How to write a need that gets responses

  • Name the tool specifically (e.g. “gas pressure washer ~2700 PSI,” not just “washer”)
  • Dates or a window
  • Project context in one line (driveway, tile bathroom)
  • Pickup preference if you know it
  • Budget ballpark optional but helpful

After someone says they have it

You still use the normal Sparetoolz rental path when ready: request dates, owner accepts, Stripe pay, private handoff details, condition photos.
